OU Texas

Posted by M.G. on October 8, 2008 – 9:26 am

The OU Texas rivalry game is this weekend. I have been doing a lot of thinking and I have decided that Texas has a lot better chance to win than we are giving them credit. I may lose a lot of fans with this post, but Texas is a great team. I hope I am wrong, and I need your convincing, so be sure to comment and tell me how OU will win. Let me give you some reasons Texas could win.

First of all, the biggest reason OU could lose is special teams. Is there anyone who can tackle a kick returner before the 40 yard line? OU’s Kicker Jimmy Stevens #17 has only a few touchbacks. I am just convinced that Texas won’t have far to go on every possession.

With that being said, Texas’ offense is outstanding. This should be a very high scoring game with both teams near and over 40 points each. Since Texas provides such firepower and OU will constantly be defending a short field, OU will have to outscore Texas as opposed to holding Texas’ scoring down.

That is a daunting task. Colt McCoy #12 has shown that is has become more a dual threat QB than he was last season. He has used his legs so far this season to score 4 TDs and over 300 yards averaging 7 yards a carry. OU hasn’t played a QB who was a legitimate threat in two ways yet, and corralling Colt will be very difficult.

If this game comes down to a who-scores-last competition that is going to put even more emphasis on special teams. This is my final point. Jimmy Stevens has only kicked one FG all season. A freshman kicker, playing the biggest rivalry game of his short career may have to kick for a win. Well, I hope it works out.

I am hoping OU wins, but there are a lot of reasons why they could lose. A close game- but Texas will win 52-49.

Not so fast my friend! Although McCoy has become more of a dual threat, I don’t see him being able to get past Oklahoma’s LBs. Reynolds, Clayton, and Lewis are doing an amazing job containing anyone who manages to get past the D-line. The Sooners faced their first mobile QB last week against Baylor, and did a pretty good job stopping him.

I don’t think that field position will be a big issue this game, the Sooners know they are weak on special teams, and will be focusing on that in practice this week.

Now let me get to why I think OU will win.

Although Texas has gotten tougher on defense, they still won’t have an answer for Oklahoma’s offense. OU ranks 5 in the nation in total offense at just under 550 yards per game. Behind their massive offensive line, Bradford is going to have all day to stand in the pocket and pick apart Texas’ inexperienced secondary.

Oklahoma is going to be using a lot of different defensive schemes and blitzes to confuse McCoy, and I just don’t think that he will be able to handle the pressure. Without a real threat for McCoy to throw to, and an offensive line who won’t be able to match the strength and speed of Oklahoma’s D-line, McCoy is going to be flushed out of the pocket, where he will meet our big and fast LBs.

Don’t get me wrong, Texas is a very talented football team, and will remain that way for years to come, but this isn’t going to be their year. Oklahoma comes away from Dallas with a 56-42 win.

This is definately the game to watch this season. Clearly these are well matched teams, but OU definately has the advantage. Yes, Texas has their defense stats up, but OK has proven they can plow through with barely a scratch.

This is going to come down to a battle of the QBs and hands down Bradford is the best QB in college football this year. McCoy is #3 or #4 in the Big 12.

OU didn’t capture #1 only to let Texas ruin their record.

Anyways, I only get to go to the BCS Championship if OU holds on the rest of the season!

No team captures #1 to lose it, but that is the nature of college football. Just like last season, I think there will be no undeafted teams by the time bowl season comes around. I don’t think that OU will lose their top ranking against Texas. The Longhorns are very under the radar this year and honestly I think there are better teams below them in the rankings. One of those teams is Texas Tech, which is the team that I think will take down the Sooners. OU has a pretty soft conference schedule with K-State and Nebraska on the schedule. O St. is looking good…for now…Mizzou may have a gift for them on Saturday. But it looks like OU may skate by until Tech…or the pollsters will see the cupcake schedule and pull a Georgia on OU. I will say though, this is probably the best year for OU to go back to the BCS championship game. AS for this game, I think OU will win it by a touchdown.

Ok, I really hate to be hateful, but ARE YOU GUYS SERIOUS? First and foremost let me address the issue about the cupcake schedule, do you need to be reminded that the Big 12 conference is the best in the nation with OU being the best of them all? Secondly, OU has 4 of the remaining 7 games left against top 20 teams! Go eat a cupcake and watch some football. If you will notice something else about Texas, they have not seen a speedy uptempo no huddle offense yet this year! The D coordinator said they plan to show them several looks and schemes, but how? You have no time to set up defenses!!!!! TCU had the #1 ranked D in the country, threw up 228 yards of total offense in the FIRST QUARTER!!! It is highly important that if you are going to put yourself out on this site and voice your opinion that you have some knowledge to back it up and not make it what it is “your opinion”. Now to the people who are saying Colt “myboy” McCoy is going to beat OUs defense by himself, seriously do some research! You dont think Ventables has done his??? Everytime OU has played a qb of his caliber the same thing happens everytime!!! Nebraskas defense is called the black shirts, OUs defense should be called the Heisman Killers! PLEase please please do not sit here and talk this junk about texas football to me or any other person, OU 52 - texas 17.

Thanks for not being hateful! The cupcake schedule that was mentioned is the schedule played so far, not what lies ahead. You can not say that the level of play that OU has encountered so far is near the capability of Texas.

You are right when OU played TCU, TCU had the #1 Defense statistically. Statistics are all about situations, had OU played TCU’s prior schedule OU would easily have had the #1 defense. Please realize that TCU’s stats were drastically changed because OU plays better than what they had seen before. Most teams in college don’t have the capability to pass with such accuracy and consistency as OU. That is why TCU can just focus on stopping the run and “Statistically” have a great performance against the other teams.

I do agree that the Editors of this site need to have knowledge to back up what we say, but with that knowledge is how we do form our OPINIONS. I appreciate you taking the time to voice your OPINIONS on what knowledge you have.

Brent Venables (without a t) is a great defensive coach there is no doubt, and I am sure he has seen the same stats that I have about Colt McCoy’s rushing and passing. What QB in your OPINION is the same caliber as Colt McCoy, that OU has played?

I hope you are right and OU wins, however according to the facts, history, and my OPINION there is no way it will be a blowout. Thank you for your comments, please continue to share your OPINION anytime.

  6. 6. ungrateninja Said:

You want knowledge…the last time OU really blew out Texas was two years ago. Last year’s score was 28-21 OU…so the Sooners winning by a touchdown is likely. I agree that Venables is a great defense but Texas has a better defensive line that could hold Murray to a subpar performance…but that will mainly be because of his knee injury. Texas also has a great special teams unit…but we all know OU never has a good special team unit…ever. Or maybe that is just my opinion.

Oh and yes the last 3 of 6 games OU has left are against teams currently in the top 20, but let’s be honest the only team left on OU’s schedule that will give the Sooners nightmares is Texas Tech. Tech did beat them 34-27 last year and has the potential to ruin OU’s championship season…and maybe OSU if OU is too busy looking ahead.

  7. 7. steudie Said:

OK ungrateninja, first of all Tech beat a Bradfordless offense last year at their place. We will handle them in Norman without any problem. Secondly they will score their points but until they hire Mike Stoops or an equivalent to coach their defense we will outscore them in Norman. Now back to the subject of Texas beating OU in MG’s opinion. I want to give it up to MG for being unbiased in his analysis of the game tomorrow. When you think about Texas’ weapon in Crosby returning kicks against OU’s special ed Special Teams it can be scary for Crimson & Cream fans. But I have good news. Stoops knows this too and I am sure that has been a major focus in practice this past week. Look for touchbacks and pooch kicks heading away from Crosby.
Now OU just has to put the shackles on Colt and his favorite receiver/roomate Shipley. Contain the running game and OU will fair well on the defensive side of the ball. This is the best defensive backfield OU has fielded in quite some time. On the other hand Texas is not as fortunate in this area. Bradford will pick them apart. Barring major injuries OU should win this game. My score prediction OU 31 Texas 24. BOOMER SOONER BABY and God Bless!
